Tranexamic acid strength: what to know

A cream, serum, tablet, or injection delivers tranexamic acid in a different way. The label may describe concentration for a topical product or the amount in a prescribed medicine, but the figures cannot be compared as if they were the same product. The intended use also changes the safety questions: skin pigmentation care is different from treatment for heavy menstrual bleeding. Kidney function, a history of clotting, and other medicines can affect prescribing decisions.

Use the strength and route written on your prescription or product directions. Do not increase an amount because a lower strength seems slow, and do not substitute a skin product for oral medicine. Contact a clinician if you have taken the wrong product or amount, develop significant skin swelling, or notice a new vision change. Get urgent help for chest pain, breathing difficulty, coughing blood, or a painful swollen leg. If pigmentation changes quickly or bleeds, arrange a skin assessment instead of simply choosing a stronger topical product.
