What should you know about traditional cupping therapy?

In dry cupping, cups create suction on intact skin. The pressure can leave temporary circular marks and local tenderness. Wet cupping additionally involves small skin openings and therefore needs particularly careful infection control. Cupping may be used alongside care for back muscle spasm or upper-back pain, but it does not establish the cause of either symptom.

Evidence and personal responses vary, so a practitioner should explain the intended goal rather than promise a specific result. Cupping is complementary care, not a substitute for assessment when pain is severe, persistent, or associated with neurological symptoms.

Share your medicines and medical history, especially blood-thinning treatment, bleeding problems, skin disease, diabetes, pregnancy, or a weakened immune system. Do not place cups over broken or infected skin. Confirm that equipment is clean and that single-use items are discarded when wet cupping is offered. Keep the treated area clean and avoid vigorous rubbing while marks settle.

Get medical advice for spreading redness, warmth, pus, fever, worsening swelling, or pain that does not settle. After wet cupping, urgent review is needed for heavy bleeding, fainting, or signs of infection. Back pain with leg weakness, saddle numbness, or bladder or bowel changes needs urgent assessment rather than cupping.

Ask whether cupping is appropriate with your medicines, whether dry or wet cupping is being proposed, how skin injury will be prevented, and what other treatment should address the underlying problem.
