What should you know about toxic and non-toxic goiter?

A goiter is a thyroid that has become larger than usual. It may be smooth or contain one or more nodules, and it can be visible at the front of the neck or found during an examination. A toxic goiter is active in the sense that thyroid tissue releases excess hormone, leading to hyperthyroidism. A non-toxic goiter may have normal thyroid hormone production, although thyroid function can change over time. The swelling itself does not show whether the thyroid is overactive; blood tests and sometimes imaging help clarify this.

Arrange a GP Consultation if you notice neck swelling, a tight collar sensation, hoarseness, or trouble swallowing. A clinician can examine the thyroid, review medicines and symptoms, and request a Thyroid Function Test. Further assessment may be needed if a nodule is felt or the thyroid is pressing on nearby structures. Do not start iodine or thyroid supplements without advice, because they can alter thyroid function and interfere with assessment.

Seek urgent medical help for severe breathing difficulty, rapidly increasing neck swelling, fainting, or a very fast or irregular heartbeat with chest pain or marked weakness. Arrange prompt review for new persistent palpitations, shaking, heat intolerance, unexplained weight change, or worsening difficulty swallowing. These symptoms need assessment because they can reflect hormone excess or pressure from an enlarged thyroid.

Ask whether your thyroid hormone levels are normal, whether the enlargement is diffuse or nodular, and whether you need imaging or specialist review. Ask which symptoms should prompt earlier contact and whether any current medicine, supplement, or contrast scan could affect your thyroid tests.
