What should you know about total protein blood test?

Proteins in blood help maintain fluid balance and support immune and transport functions. Albumin is made mainly by the liver, while globulins include several immune-related proteins. A result outside the laboratory range can relate to hydration, nutrition, liver or kidney function, inflammation, or protein loss, but it does not diagnose one condition by itself.

Ask whether fasting is needed and tell the testing team about medicines, supplements, recent illness, and pregnancy. A blood draw usually involves a brief needle prick and may leave mild soreness. Do not change protein intake or treatment based on one result. Your clinician may compare albumin, kidney and liver tests, blood counts, and urine findings.
