What should you know about topical retinoids products?

Topical retinoids are creams, gels, or lotions applied to skin. Prescription examples include tretinoin and adapalene, while cosmetic products may use retinol or related ingredients. They are not interchangeable: the ingredient, formulation, skin penetration, and instructions can differ. A product can help unclog pores and regulate shedding, but the right choice depends on the concern and the condition of your skin.

Early dryness, flaking, redness, or stinging is possible. These effects do not prove that a product is working, and pushing through severe irritation can damage the skin barrier and leave lingering colour changes.

Use a gentle cleanser, apply the retinoid as directed to dry skin, and follow with moisturiser. Start with the schedule recommended for your product or by your clinician. Keep it away from the eyes, lips, nostrils, cuts, and recently hair-removed skin. Use daytime sun protection and avoid adding scrubs or several strong actives at once.

Keep the container closed and follow its storage instructions. Tell a clinician about pregnancy or plans to conceive, breastfeeding, eczema, rosacea, medicines, and any history of severe reactions. If acne is painful, scarring, or persistent, a diagnosis may be more useful than changing products repeatedly.

Stop and obtain advice for facial swelling, hives, blistering, intense burning, or a rash spreading beyond the application area. Arrange assessment for worsening acne, scarring, persistent dark patches, or a lesion that bleeds, crusts, changes, or fails to heal. These signs need a diagnosis rather than stronger retinoid use.
