Topical antibiotics for perioral dermatitis

Perioral dermatitis causes small red bumps, burning, or tightness around the mouth, nose, or eyes. The rash can resemble pimples, but its pattern and irritation matter when choosing treatment. A prescribed cream or gel is applied to affected skin according to the instructions; improvement may be gradual rather than immediate.

Avoid assuming that an over-the-counter antibiotic is suitable for facial skin. Unnecessary antibiotics can irritate the area and contribute to resistance. Steroid creams may also worsen or prolong this condition, so discuss any current product with a clinician before continuing it.

Use a gentle cleanser, lukewarm water, and a plain moisturiser if your skin feels dry. Apply only the prescribed amount to clean, dry skin and wash your hands afterwards. Keep heavy cosmetics, fragranced products, and scrubs away from the rash while it settles.

Take a clear photo before treatment and note changes in redness, bumps, burning, or scaling. If the medicine stings strongly, causes swelling, or the rash spreads, contact the prescriber for tailored advice rather than adding another active product.

Arrange medical review if the rash involves the eyes, causes eye pain or vision changes, develops crusting or discharge, or continues to spread. Seek urgent help for facial swelling with breathing difficulty. A clinician can distinguish perioral dermatitis from other facial rashes and adjust treatment if needed.

Ask which antibiotic and formulation you should use, where it should be applied, and how long to continue after the bumps improve. Ask whether toothpaste, cosmetics, steroid cream, or another product could be contributing, and what to do if symptoms return.
