What IPL can and cannot do

Intense pulsed light releases a range of wavelengths rather than one focused laser wavelength. Pigment in the hair absorbs the light and converts it to heat, which can reduce future growth from follicles in an active growth phase. Because follicles cycle, treatment is usually planned as a series rather than a single visit, and maintenance may be discussed.

Dark hair generally provides more target pigment than very light, grey, red, or white hair. Skin with a recent tan or naturally higher pigment may absorb more light, raising the need for careful settings and professional judgment. IPL may reduce shaving-related ingrown hairs, but it does not diagnose or treat hormonal causes such as hirsutism.

Preparing for an IPL session

At consultation, disclose recent sun exposure, medicines that increase light sensitivity, tattoos, scars, active rashes, and a history of pigment changes. Follow instructions about shaving and pausing wax or plucking. Arrive with clean skin unless your provider gives different guidance, and protect the area from sun before and after treatment. Do not apply IPL over broken, infected, or inflamed skin.
