Fatigue that limits normal activities or persists despite rest

The short answer

Too much fatigue during pregnancy may be related to normal physical changes, but severe, sudden, or persistent exhaustion deserves a clinical assessment. Pregnancy can increase the body's workload, disturb sleep, and make everyday activity feel harder. The pattern matters: note when the tiredness began, whether it is worsening, and whether rest helps.

What marked tiredness can mean

Fatigue can occur at different stages of pregnancy and may be stronger when sleep is interrupted, appetite is poor, or nausea makes eating and drinking difficult. Anaemia can contribute to low energy, breathlessness, dizziness, or a fast heartbeat. Dehydration may cause thirst, a dry mouth, dark urine, or light-headedness. Fever, cough, diarrhoea, or body aches can point to an infection. Mood, workload, and prolonged stress can also affect energy. Conditions such as Anaemia, Coeliac Disease, Chronic Kidney Disease, or COVID-19 may present with fatigue alongside other symptoms; fatigue alone does not identify a specific condition.

Steps that may help

Plan short rest periods and reduce tasks that leave you depleted. Eat regular meals or snacks containing varied foods, and drink fluids regularly unless your maternity team has given different advice. Gentle movement, such as a comfortable walk, may support sleep and stamina when you feel well enough. Keep a simple record of sleep, meals, fluids, symptoms, and any medicines or supplements. Do not start iron, herbal products, or other treatment without checking that it is suitable in pregnancy. Arrange a prenatal review if fatigue limits daily activities or does not improve with rest.

When to seek care

Contact your maternity team promptly if exhaustion is accompanied by breathlessness at rest, fainting, chest discomfort, a racing heartbeat, persistent vomiting, inability to keep fluids down, fever, confusion, or very little urine. Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, collapse, or new weakness on one side. If you feel persistently low, hopeless, unusually anxious, or unable to cope, tell a healthcare professional; emotional wellbeing is part of pregnancy care.

Questions for your doctor or midwife

Could my symptoms fit Anaemia or another condition? Do I need blood or urine tests? Which foods, fluids, supplements, and medicines are appropriate for my pregnancy? What changes should prompt an urgent call?

Questions people ask

Is tiredness always a problem in pregnancy?

No. Tiredness is common, but a marked change, worsening symptoms, or associated warning signs should be discussed with your maternity team.

Can I take an iron supplement for fatigue?

Ask your clinician first. Iron is useful when deficiency is present, but supplementation should match your assessment and pregnancy advice.
