Can too much cabbage cause a goitre?

Short answer
Eating cabbage does not usually cause a goitre; thyroid swelling is more often related to thyroid disease, iodine problems, or another cause.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Cabbage, iodine, and the thyroid
A goitre is an enlarged thyroid gland at the front of the neck. Cabbage, broccoli, and similar vegetables contain compounds that can affect thyroid hormone production mainly when intake is very large and iodine intake is inadequate; normal portions, especially when cooked, are not generally a reason to avoid them. Goitres can occur with an underactive thyroid, an overactive thyroid, thyroid inflammation, nodules, or other thyroid changes. The swelling may be smooth or lumpy and may occur with tiredness, weight change, heat or cold sensitivity, palpitations, or no other symptoms.
The size of a neck swelling does not show whether thyroid hormone levels are high, low, or normal. A physical examination and thyroid blood tests help clarify the cause.
What to do next
Continue a varied diet rather than cutting out cabbage based on fear. Avoid taking iodine or thyroid supplements without advice, because excess iodine can also disturb thyroid function. If you notice a new neck lump, arrange a GP consultation. Bring details about its onset, change in size, swallowing or voice symptoms, family history, and any medicines or supplements. A clinician may examine the neck and request a thyroid function test or other assessment.
When to seek care
Seek urgent help if neck swelling causes difficulty breathing, noisy breathing, inability to swallow saliva, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Arrange prompt medical review for a new or enlarging lump, persistent hoarseness, painful swelling, unexplained weight change, tremor, racing heartbeat, or marked tiredness. These signs do not identify a cause by themselves, but they warrant assessment.
Questions for your doctor
Could this swelling be a goitre, nodule, or another neck problem? Should I have a thyroid function test? Is my iodine intake appropriate? Do my medicines or supplements affect the thyroid? What change in size or symptoms should prompt review?
