Tonsillitis with a runny nose

Viruses can inflame the lining of the nose and the tonsils during the same illness. Mucus draining backwards may further irritate the throat and cause coughing or throat clearing. A runny nose makes a viral cause more plausible, but it does not diagnose the illness by itself. Fever, Sore Throat, Earache, and Swollen Glands may also occur. Bacterial illnesses such as Strep Throat can have a different symptom pattern, so a clinician considers the complete history rather than one symptom.

Drink fluids, rest, and use saline nasal spray or drops if they are suitable for you. Blow your nose gently, wash your hands, and avoid sharing cups or utensils. Warm drinks or cool foods may ease throat irritation. Follow label directions for any symptom medicine and check with a pharmacist or clinician if you take regular medicines or have a chronic condition. Antibiotic Treatment is not useful for a viral illness and should not be self-started.

Get urgent help for breathing difficulty, drooling, inability to swallow fluids, rapidly increasing throat swelling, or severe one-sided pain. Arrange a review if Fever is persistent or worsening, symptoms are not settling, dehydration develops, or an Earache becomes severe. Seek advice sooner if you have reduced immunity or a condition that makes infections harder to manage.

Ask whether the runny nose and throat findings fit a viral illness, whether examination or testing is needed, and what changes should prompt review. Mention the colour and duration of nasal discharge, any Fever, and whether swallowing or breathing is affected.
