Can tonsillitis cause a headache?

Tonsillitis inflames the tonsils and commonly causes a sore throat and painful swallowing. Fever, tiredness, swollen glands, and headache may occur as part of the same infection. Headache is a symptom that can accompany tonsillitis, but it does not identify the cause by itself; dehydration, a viral illness, migraine, or another infection can also produce head pain.

A clinician considers the whole pattern, including the throat appearance, fever, neck symptoms, hydration, and how quickly the illness began. Strep throat is one possible bacterial cause, but a headache alone does not establish it.

Sip fluids often, rest in a quiet room, and choose foods that are easy to swallow. Follow the label or a clinician's advice for an appropriate pain or fever medicine, taking account of age, pregnancy, allergies, and other medicines. Avoid taking more than one product containing the same pain-relieving ingredient. If headache continues because drinking is difficult, arrange a GP Consultation for assessment.

Seek urgent help for a sudden severe headache, confusion, fainting, a stiff neck, new weakness, breathing difficulty, inability to swallow saliva, or a rapidly worsening condition. Prompt clinical advice is also appropriate when headache persists with fever, vomiting, poor fluid intake, or marked drowsiness. A headache with tonsillitis can be uncomplicated, but these features require assessment rather than home monitoring alone.

Ask whether the headache fits the throat infection, whether dehydration may be contributing, which pain medicine is safe, and whether a throat test is appropriate. Mention any neck stiffness, light sensitivity, vomiting, or previous migraine pattern.
