Tonsillitis dansk: what should you know?

Tonsils are small areas of tissue at the back of the throat that help recognise germs. Inflammation may follow a viral infection or a bacterial infection such as Strep Throat. A clinician may look at the throat, feel the neck, and consider the pattern of symptoms before deciding whether testing or treatment is useful. Earache can occur because throat inflammation shares nearby nerves; it does not by itself show that the ear is infected.

Rest, drink fluids in small frequent amounts, and choose soft or cool foods if swallowing hurts. Follow the label or a clinician's advice for suitable pain or fever medicine, and do not give children medicines that are unsuitable for their age. Avoid sharing cups, cutlery, or toothbrushes while unwell, and wash hands regularly. Antibiotic Treatment helps only when a bacterial cause is suspected or confirmed; it does not treat viral inflammation.

Arrange a GP Consultation if symptoms are severe, keep returning, or are not improving, especially with persistent Fever, marked Swollen Glands, or an Earache. Seek urgent help if breathing is difficult, saliva cannot be swallowed, the voice becomes muffled, the mouth is hard to open, or one side of the throat swells noticeably. These signs can indicate a complication needing prompt assessment.
