Toe Nails Fungus Treatment: What to Know

Short answer
Toenail fungus treatment may involve a medicated lacquer, cream, tablets, or a procedure chosen after the nail is examined and the diagnosis is checked.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

- Protect the area and arrange an assessment if the change persists or causes symptoms.
What it means
Fungal infection often makes a toenail yellow, white or brown, thicker, brittle, or partly detached. Athlete’s foot can spread to the nails, but trauma, psoriasis and other nail changes can look similar. A clinician may inspect the nail and take a clipping or scraping before recommending treatment, especially when tablets are being considered.
The affected portion has to grow out as healthy nail replaces it, so improvement is gradual. Treating nearby foot fungus and keeping feet dry can reduce re-exposure.
What to do
Keep nails trimmed straight across, clean and dry, and avoid sharing nail tools or footwear. Wear breathable shoes and change damp socks. Do not scrape deeply under the nail or use leftover medication.
A topical antifungal may suit limited disease and requires consistent application. Oral antifungal treatment can reach the growing nail through the bloodstream but needs a clinician’s review of medicines and health history. Laser treatment or nail surgery may be discussed in selected cases; these options are not interchangeable with antifungal medicine.
When to seek care
Arrange an assessment if a nail is painful, crumbling, lifting, spreading to other nails, or failing to improve with sensible nail care. Seek prompt medical advice for redness, warmth, swelling, drainage, or a wound around the nail. People with diabetes, poor circulation, reduced sensation, or a weakened immune system should have new nail changes assessed early.
Questions for your doctor
Could this be fungal infection or another nail condition, and is a sample needed? Which treatment fits the number of nails and the area involved? How long should I use it, and what changes should make me stop or return?

Questions people ask
Can I diagnose the cause from the appearance alone?
No. Several nail or skin conditions can look alike, so an examination may be needed before treatment.
When should I seek medical advice?
Arrange an assessment for persistent, painful, spreading, bleeding or infected-looking changes, and seek earlier advice for diabetes, poor circulation or reduced sensation.
