What should you know about treating toe fissures?

Short answer
Toe fissures need gentle cleansing, regular emollient care and treatment of any underlying eczema, psoriasis or infection.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- First-line care
- Gentle washing followed by regular emollient use
- Avoid
- Cutting, picking and harsh antiseptics
Why toe skin splits
A fissure is a narrow split through dry, thickened or inflamed skin. Toes may crack when the barrier loses moisture, when footwear rubs, or when skin is repeatedly exposed to water and irritants. Atopic dermatitis and psoriasis can produce persistent scaling and fissures. Peeling or itching between the toes can also occur with athlete’s foot, which needs a different approach from simple dryness.
Practical treatment
Wash with lukewarm water and a gentle cleanser, then pat dry carefully, including between the toes. Apply a bland emollient to the cracked skin several times through the day, especially after washing; avoid packing thick ointment into damp spaces between toes. Choose breathable footwear, change damp socks and reduce friction from tight shoes. Do not pull away loose skin or use acids, blades or harsh antiseptics. A clinician may add treatment for eczema, psoriasis or fungal infection after examining the pattern.
When to seek care
Arrange an assessment when fissures keep reopening, are deep, prevent walking, or occur with marked scaling or itch. Get prompt care for spreading redness, warmth, swelling, pus, fever or rapidly increasing pain. If you have diabetes, poor circulation, reduced sensation or immune problems, seek advice early because a small crack can become harder to manage.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what is causing the fissures, whether fungal testing is needed, which emollient suits your skin, how to protect the cracks while walking, and which warning signs require urgent review.

Questions people ask
Should I moisturise between my toes?
Keep the spaces between toes dry; apply emollient mainly to the cracked outer skin unless a clinician advises otherwise.
Why do toe fissures keep returning?
Repeated dryness, rubbing, eczema, psoriasis or fungal infection can keep weakening the skin barrier, so the cause may need treatment.
