What should you know about TNM lung cancer staging?

T describes the size and local extent of the lung tumour, including nearby structures it may involve. N describes which regional lymph nodes contain cancer, if any. M describes distant spread, such as cancer in another organ. These findings are combined into an overall stage that helps the team compare treatment options and explain the outlook.

A clinical stage is based on examinations, scans, and samples before treatment. A pathological stage may be added after surgery when removed tissue and lymph nodes can be examined. The two assessments can differ because each uses different information.

Ask which T, N, and M categories are known and which are still being checked. Imaging, a biopsy, and genomic tumour profiling may be used to refine the plan. Depending on the stage and tumour type, care may involve surgery such as a lung lobectomy, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, or another systemic treatment.

Take the staging report to a lung cancer specialist and ask how it affects the aim of treatment. A stage label is not a treatment prescription; fitness, lung function, molecular findings, and your preferences also matter.

Contact your care team for worsening breathlessness, coughing blood, chest pain, new confusion, weakness, or a rapidly changing hoarse voice. Sudden severe breathing difficulty, collapse, or new one-sided weakness needs emergency assessment.
