The expander is placed beneath breast skin, often with muscle or supportive tissue covering it. During follow-up visits, a clinician adds sterile fluid through a filling port. This slowly stretches the surrounding tissues so they can accommodate a future implant. The device is not usually the final reconstruction; it is part of a staged plan.

Your surgical plan may depend on the breast operation, skin condition, previous treatment, chest shape, and whether one or both breasts are being reconstructed. Some people have an expander placed during breast removal surgery, while others need healing before reconstruction begins.

Ask which medicines, supplements, and smoking or nicotine products could affect healing. Arrange help for the first days, follow wound-care instructions, and attend filling appointments so changes can be made gradually. A feeling of tightness or pressure can occur as the breast is expanded; report discomfort that is worsening or difficult to control.

Protect the incision as directed and avoid strenuous arm movements until your surgical team clears them. Keep a simple record of pain, swelling, drainage, temperature, and changes in the breast so you can describe them accurately.

Contact your surgical team promptly for increasing redness, warmth, swelling, drainage, wound separation, fever, sudden breast asymmetry, or pain that is getting worse. Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, fainting, or sudden confusion.

Ask how long the expander is expected to remain, where the filling port sits, how often appointments may be needed, and what symptoms should trigger a same-day call. Discuss the planned next stage, possible alternatives, scar care, arm movement, and how previous radiotherapy or other treatment may affect healing.
