What should you know about tissue array immunohistochemistry?

Short answer

Tissue-array immunohistochemistry uses antibody stains on arranged tissue samples to show protein patterns under a microscope.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How the method works

A tissue array places small samples from multiple tissue specimens into one paraffin block. Thin sections are placed on slides, then treated with antibodies that bind to selected proteins. A coloured reaction shows where the target is present, absent, or distributed within cells. A pathologist compares the staining pattern with the tissue appearance and clinical context. The result can help classify tissue, compare samples, and explore markers relevant to diagnosis or treatment decisions. A stain is one part of pathology interpretation, not a diagnosis by itself.

What to do with a result

Ask which marker was tested, why it was selected, and whether the result is reported as positive, negative, weak, or strong according to that test. Ask how the finding fits the biopsy report and whether another stain or molecular test is needed. Immunohistochemistry may be performed on tissue obtained through a Biopsy. Keep the report and ask whether the tested sample was adequate for interpretation.

When to seek care

The laboratory method itself does not usually create symptoms that require urgent care. Contact your clinical team promptly if you develop increasing pain, redness, drainage, fever, or bleeding after the procedure that supplied the tissue. Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, severe breathing difficulty, or sudden weakness. For an unexpected pathology result, ask the treating team when it should be discussed and whether any appointment is time-sensitive.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what the stain detects, whether the pattern supports a particular diagnosis, how reliable the sample is, and whether the result changes the next diagnostic or treatment step.

Questions people ask

Is tissue-array immunohistochemistry a separate biopsy?

Usually it is a laboratory method applied to prepared tissue; the sample may have come from an earlier biopsy.

Does a positive stain confirm cancer?

No. The meaning depends on the marker, tissue appearance, sample quality, and the wider pathology interpretation.
