Short answer

Tiredness can continue in the second trimester, but marked or worsening fatigue should be discussed because anaemia and other problems may contribute.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Severe, worsening, or function-limiting fatigue, especially with breathlessness or dizziness.

Why energy may vary

Pregnancy places continuing demands on the body, and sleep may be interrupted by discomfort, movement, urination, or worry. Activity, work, caring responsibilities, stress, and reduced appetite can compound fatigue. Anaemia is another possible contributor and may occur with tiredness, breathlessness on ordinary activity, paleness, dizziness, or a racing heartbeat. Fatigue may also accompany infection or thyroid problems. The pattern matters: mild tiredness that improves with rest is different from exhaustion that is sudden, progressive, or limiting.

Ways to support your energy

Pace tasks, accept practical help, and take short rest periods before you are overtired. Aim for regular meals containing iron-rich foods alongside a varied diet, drink fluids, and use gentle activity if your maternity team has said it is suitable. Keep prenatal appointments so blood tests and blood pressure checks are not missed. Do not take iron tablets or other supplements unless your maternity clinician recommends them; Iron Therapy may be considered when a deficiency is identified.

When to contact your maternity team

Tell your maternity team about fatigue that is severe, worsening, or affecting eating, work, sleep, or basic activities. Contact them promptly for breathlessness at rest, chest pain, fainting, a persistent racing heartbeat, fever, severe headache, vision changes, sudden swelling, or reduced fetal movement once you have been advised how to monitor movement. Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, collapse, or heavy bleeding.

Questions for your doctor or midwife

Could anaemia, thyroid problems, infection, sleep disruption, or my medicines explain this fatigue? Do I need blood tests or a review of my diet and supplements? Which changes in movement or other symptoms should prompt urgent contact?
