Short answer

Tiredness during the first trimester is common, yet severe, worsening or disabling fatigue needs assessment for other causes.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What can drive first-trimester fatigue

Early pregnancy changes can affect sleep, appetite, nausea, mood and the body’s circulation. The effort of coping with vomiting or eating less may leave you depleted. Tiredness may be prominent even before the pregnancy feels physically obvious, but it cannot confirm pregnancy or assess its progress. Anaemia, dehydration, infection, stress and other health problems can look similar. The pattern, associated symptoms and your medical history help a clinician decide whether you need examination or tests.

Making the day manageable

Schedule short rest periods, lower non-essential demands and ask for help with lifting, shopping or childcare. Try small frequent meals and regular sips of fluid, especially if nausea is present. Keep a comfortable level of gentle activity if you are well, and stop when symptoms increase. Take prescribed antenatal supplements as directed and check before using pain medicines, herbal products or extra vitamins. Record vomiting, urine changes, bleeding, pain and how fatigue affects daily life.

When fatigue is not routine

Seek urgent care for fainting, severe breathlessness, chest pain, severe abdominal or one-sided pain, heavy bleeding or confusion. Contact your maternity service promptly if you cannot keep fluids down, urinate very little, develop fever, feel profoundly weak, or notice a racing heartbeat with dizziness. Such symptoms may point to dehydration, infection, bleeding or another problem needing timely care.

Questions for your appointment

Could vomiting, diet, bleeding or Anaemia explain my energy loss? Which fluids and supplements are appropriate? Who should I call if symptoms worsen before my next appointment?
