Tiredness after delivery: what should you know?

Short answer
Tiredness after delivery can reflect recovery and broken sleep, but persistent or severe fatigue deserves a postpartum health review.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why you may feel tired
Pregnancy, labour, blood loss, feeding and frequent waking can all reduce energy. Anaemia may cause fatigue, dizziness, paleness or a racing heartbeat. Dehydration can add headache, dark urine and weakness, particularly while breastfeeding. COVID-19 or another infection may cause tiredness with fever or respiratory symptoms. Low mood, anxiety and emotional overload can make rest less restorative; Burnout describes sustained exhaustion linked to prolonged demands. Chronic Kidney Disease, Coeliac Disease, alcohol-related problems or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome can also cause fatigue, but they need assessment alongside the full history.
Ways to support recovery
Rest whenever a safe opportunity appears, accept practical help, and keep water and easy meals nearby. Rise slowly if you feel light-headed. Tell your maternity or primary-care team if tiredness prevents basic tasks, feeding, bonding or sleep even when the baby sleeps. Do not start iron or other supplements without advice, because the right treatment depends on the cause and your medical history.
When to seek care
Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, fainting, chest pain, severe breathlessness, a severe headache with visual changes, confusion, a high fever or rapidly worsening illness. Contact your maternity or mental-health team promptly for persistent sadness, frightening thoughts, inability to care for yourself or thoughts of harming yourself or the baby. Arrange a review for fatigue that is severe, prolonged or accompanied by palpitations, swelling, fever or poor intake.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether blood loss, Anaemia, thyroid problems, infection, dehydration or mood symptoms could explain your fatigue. Share sleep, feeding, bleeding, pain, medicines, fluid intake and emotional state. Ask which tests are appropriate, how to improve recovery safely, and who to contact outside routine appointments.

Questions people ask
How much tiredness is expected after delivery?
Some tiredness is expected during physical recovery and disrupted sleep, but fatigue that is severe, prolonged or stopping daily care warrants review.
Can postpartum tiredness be related to mood?
Yes. Low mood, anxiety and emotional overload can worsen exhaustion; prompt support is appropriate if distress persists or safety feels at risk.
