What should you know about tired and fatigued?

Short answer
Fatigue is more than feeling sleepy: it is a persistent lack of energy that can interfere with ordinary activities.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How tiredness and fatigue differ
Sleepiness is a tendency to fall asleep, while fatigue can feel like heaviness, weakness, slowed thinking, or having no reserve for tasks. They can occur together but may have different contributors. Broken sleep, stress, low mood, illness, dehydration, alcohol, anaemia, or an eating pattern that lacks enough nourishment can all matter. Chronic fatigue syndrome is a separate condition with a characteristic pattern that requires clinical assessment; ongoing fatigue by itself does not establish that diagnosis.
Ways to manage the symptom
Notice whether rest actually improves your energy and whether activity causes a delayed worsening. Pace demanding tasks, take regular breaks, keep sleep and wake times steady, drink fluids, and choose regular meals. Gentle movement may help if tolerated, but pushing through a marked deterioration is unhelpful. Keep a symptom diary and bring it to a primary-care visit, especially if fatigue lasts beyond a short illness or affects attendance, driving, work, or personal care.
When to seek medical care
Get urgent care for fainting, chest pain, severe breathlessness, new confusion, sudden one-sided weakness, or an inability to stay awake. Seek prompt advice if fatigue accompanies persistent fever, unexplained weight change, recurrent vomiting, unusual bleeding, very dark stools, swelling, or a major change in urine. A clinician can review sleep, mood, medicines, diet, recent infections, and relevant body systems.
Questions for your doctor
Is my main problem sleepiness, low energy, weakness, or a mixture? Could a medicine, mood change, anaemia, infection, or kidney problem contribute? How should I pace activity while we investigate it?

Questions people ask
Is fatigue the same as sleepiness?
No. Sleepiness is an urge to sleep, while fatigue is reduced energy or stamina; a person can have one or both.
Can fatigue be a sign of a health condition?
Yes. Anaemia, infections, dehydration, mood problems, kidney disease, and other conditions can present with fatigue, so persistent or disruptive symptoms merit assessment.
