What should you know about tiny ringworm?

Ringworm is not caused by a worm. The fungus can affect the outer layer of skin and may slowly expand, leaving a more noticeable, raised or scaly border. It can occur on many body areas and spread through close skin contact or shared towels, clothing, sports equipment, and grooming items. Other rashes can resemble it, so an unusual patch is not confirmed by appearance alone.

Itching, scaling, and a ring-like outline are useful details to describe, but they do not replace an examination.

Keep the area clean and dry, wash hands after touching it, and avoid scratching. Do not share towels, clothing, brushes, or sports gear; launder items that contact the patch. A clinician or pharmacist can advise whether Topical Antifungal Treatment is suitable and how long to use it. Larger, multiple, recurrent, or difficult-to-reach infections may need Oral Antifungal Treatment prescribed after assessment. Avoid using a steroid cream alone on a suspected fungal rash unless a clinician directs you.

Arrange a review if the patch is spreading, painful, oozing, very inflamed, or not improving with appropriate antifungal care. Seek prompt advice if it involves the scalp, nails, eyelids, or extensive skin, or if a child or someone with reduced immunity is affected.
