What should you know about tiny lump under skin?

A soft or mobile lump may be a benign cyst or other local growth. A tender, warm lump that enlarges over a short time can fit a boil or a deeper infection. A firm spot that persists, crusts, bleeds, or changes on sun-exposed skin needs examination because some skin cancers, including basal cell carcinoma, can appear as a persistent bump. Appearance alone cannot confirm the cause.

Do not squeeze, pierce, or repeatedly press the lump. Keep the skin clean, take a photograph beside a ruler for comparison, and note pain, drainage, colour, and growth. A clinician may examine the surface and feel the deeper tissue, then recommend observation, drainage, removal, or another treatment. An intralesional steroid injection may be suitable for selected inflamed lesions, but only after diagnosis.

Seek prompt care if the lump is rapidly enlarging, very painful, hot, draining pus, associated with fever, or surrounded by spreading redness. Arrange a timely skin assessment for a lump that does not settle, keeps returning, becomes ulcerated, bleeds, or changes in colour or texture. Emergency help is needed for facial swelling with breathing or swallowing difficulty.

Ask what the location, depth, mobility, and surface suggest, and whether the lump needs imaging, drainage, or a sample. Mention recent injury, shaving, injections, acne, or infection. Ask which warning signs require a faster review and whether any proposed injection or procedure could affect nearby structures.
