Lymph nodes at the back of the neck can enlarge while the scalp, skin, or throat responds to infection or inflammation. A blocked skin gland or cyst can also form a small lump beneath the skin. The clinician will consider whether it is tender, mobile, soft, firm, or attached to deeper tissue. Head and Neck Cancer and Lymphoma can involve neck nodes, but a lump does not prove either condition. If cancer is found in a node without a clear starting point, the work-up may involve Cancer of Unknown Primary.

Check the area once rather than repeatedly handling it, and note its approximate size, tenderness, and movement. Arrange a medical review if it remains after a recent illness, becomes larger, feels hard or fixed, or appears without an obvious cause.
