What should you know about tiny insect bites?

A bite injects saliva or other material into the skin, triggering a local immune response. The spot may be red, pink, or darker than nearby skin, with a small central mark, puffiness, warmth, or itching. Several bites close together can reflect repeated exposure while sleeping or spending time outdoors. Scratching can break the skin and allow infection, while the inflammation may leave a darker patch called Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation.

The appearance alone cannot identify the insect. A clinician may ask where you were, when the spots appeared, whether other people are affected, and whether new lesions continue to form.

Gently wash the area, apply a cool clean compress, and keep fingernails short. Loose clothing can reduce friction. An oral antihistamine may ease widespread itch when it is suitable for you; a clinician or pharmacist can help choose one, especially for children, pregnancy, or regular medicines. A short course of topical corticosteroids may calm marked inflammation when recommended by a professional. Do not apply household chemicals, squeeze the spots, or share towels. Wash recently used bedding and inspect likely sources if bites recur.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness, or rapidly spreading facial swelling. Arrange prompt medical assessment if redness becomes increasingly painful or hot, pus appears, fever develops, or the reaction keeps worsening. A clinician should review bites that do not settle, repeatedly return without an obvious exposure, or leave persistent changes.
