Tinea Versicolor on Brown Skin: What to Know

Tinea versicolor affects the outer layer of skin and can alter how pigment appears. On brown skin, patches may contrast clearly after sun exposure, while the surface scale can be difficult to notice. Areas commonly include the chest, back, shoulders, neck, and sometimes skin near the thighs. Colour alone is not enough to identify the condition: dark patches can reflect inflammation or friction, and white patches can have several causes. A clinician may examine the scale and use a simple skin test when needed.

Use the antifungal treatment recommended for your skin and the affected area. Topical antifungal treatment is often considered for limited patches; medicated shampoo treatment may suit a larger surface, and oral antifungal treatment may be discussed when topical care is unsuitable or unsuccessful. Follow the full directions and protect the skin from excessive sun contrast with sensible sun protection. Do not pick, bleach, or aggressively exfoliate the patches. Texture can improve before the colour blends with surrounding skin.
