Short answer

On brown skin, tinea versicolor may appear as lighter or darker patches with subtle scale and delayed colour recovery.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How it can look

Tinea versicolor affects the outer layer of skin and can alter how pigment appears. On brown skin, patches may contrast clearly after sun exposure, while the surface scale can be difficult to notice. Areas commonly include the chest, back, shoulders, neck, and sometimes skin near the thighs. Colour alone is not enough to identify the condition: dark patches can reflect inflammation or friction, and white patches can have several causes. A clinician may examine the scale and use a simple skin test when needed.

Treatment and skin care

Use the antifungal treatment recommended for your skin and the affected area. Topical antifungal treatment is often considered for limited patches; medicated shampoo treatment may suit a larger surface, and oral antifungal treatment may be discussed when topical care is unsuitable or unsuccessful. Follow the full directions and protect the skin from excessive sun contrast with sensible sun protection. Do not pick, bleach, or aggressively exfoliate the patches. Texture can improve before the colour blends with surrounding skin.

When a review is needed

Book a medical review for patches that are spreading, repeatedly returning, sharply inflamed, or not changing as expected with treatment. Seek prompt care for pain, warmth, swelling, pus, or fever. A rash affecting the eyes, mouth, or genital area also deserves specific advice because not every product is appropriate for those sites.

Questions to bring

How can we confirm the cause of the colour change? Which treatment is suitable for my skin and location? How long might pigment differences remain after the yeast is controlled?

Questions people ask

Does tinea versicolor permanently remove skin colour?

It usually does not permanently remove pigment, but colour matching can take time after treatment.

Can tanning make the patches stand out?

Yes. Surrounding skin may darken while affected areas do not, making contrast more visible.
