What should you know about TIGIT and lung cancer?

TIGIT is a protein involved in immune-cell signalling. Cancer cells may influence checkpoint pathways to reduce an immune response. Medicines directed at this pathway are intended to change that signalling, often as part of a broader systemic treatment strategy.

TIGIT is not a separate type of lung cancer. The relevant diagnosis, stage, biopsy findings, molecular features, previous treatments, and general health all affect whether an immune-targeted approach is discussed. A test described as genomic tumour profiling may help identify treatment-relevant changes, but it does not answer every treatment question.

Ask the oncology team whether TIGIT-directed treatment is available or appropriate for your situation and whether it is being used with another medicine. Clarify the goal of treatment, how response will be assessed, and which symptoms should be reported between visits.

Keep records of breathlessness, cough, fever, skin changes, bowel changes, and energy levels. Supportive care can help with symptoms alongside cancer treatment, whatever treatment route is chosen.

Contact the oncology team promptly for new or worsening breathlessness, chest pain, persistent fever, severe diarrhoea, yellowing of the skin, confusion, or a new severe headache. Sudden weakness, a seizure, or difficulty speaking needs emergency help, because lung cancer can sometimes involve the brain and urgent assessment is needed.

Ask what your biopsy and profiling show, whether TIGIT is relevant to your tumour, and whether a combination treatment is proposed. What alternatives are available? How will scans and symptoms be reviewed? Who should you call after hours? Would radiotherapy, surgery, chemotherapy, or palliative care have a role?
