Tight chest, dry cough and shortness of breath

A dry cough may occur when the airways are irritated, while chest tightness can reflect narrowed airways or another source of discomfort. Acute Bronchitis can cause cough and chest soreness; Asthma commonly brings variable tightness, cough, and breathlessness. COPD, bronchiectasis, or infection can also affect breathing. Anaemia may cause breathlessness through reduced oxygen-carrying capacity, while heart rhythm or blood-flow problems can feel similar. The symptom pattern alone cannot identify the cause.

Note whether symptoms began suddenly or gradually, follow exercise or an exposure, worsen when lying down, or come with wheeze, fever, palpitations, swelling, or a rash. This information helps a clinician judge urgency.

Stop exertion, sit upright, loosen restrictive clothing, and move away from smoke, dust, or a suspected irritant. Use a prescribed reliever inhaler only according to your action plan. Do not borrow inhalers or delay assessment by treating a new breathing problem at home. Arrange same-day medical advice for persistent or worsening symptoms, particularly if you have lung or heart disease.

Call emergency services immediately for severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, inability to speak normally, blue or grey lips, fainting, confusion, severe chest pain, coughing blood, or sudden symptoms after a possible allergen. Anaphylaxis may include breathing difficulty with swelling, hives, or throat tightness. Sudden breathlessness with chest pain can also signal a serious heart or lung problem and should not wait for a routine appointment.

Ask whether you need an oxygen check, chest examination, breathing tests, or other investigations; which triggers to avoid; and what action plan to follow if the tightness returns.
