Thyroid cancer symptoms in females

In females, thyroid cancer can present with a thyroid nodule or a swelling in the lower neck. Pressure near the throat may make swallowing uncomfortable, while involvement of nearby nerves can affect the voice. A cough, enlarged neck lymph node or a feeling of tightness may also prompt an examination. These changes are not unique to cancer and can occur with benign nodules, infection, reflux or other neck conditions.

Menstrual, pregnancy and menopause-related changes do not by themselves diagnose thyroid cancer. They can affect general health and thyroid symptoms, so tell the clinician about pregnancy, recent birth, hormonal treatment and any previous thyroid diagnosis. Examination and ultrasound help separate the possible causes.

Arrange a medical review for a new neck swelling, persistent voice change or swallowing problem. Keep a brief symptom record and mention whether the change started during pregnancy or after delivery. Ask whether thyroid blood tests and an ultrasound are appropriate; a needle sample may be considered when imaging shows a feature that needs clarification.

If cancer is confirmed, treatment is selected according to the tumour and its extent. Options can include thyroid removal surgery, radioactive iodine therapy, targeted therapy or follow-up surveillance. Pregnancy or breastfeeding may affect the timing of some treatments, so raise this before a plan is made.

Seek urgent help for rapidly worsening neck swelling, breathing difficulty or inability to swallow fluids. Seek prompt review for a persistent hoarse voice, recurrent choking or a neck change that continues after an infection has settled. The presence or absence of a symptom cannot establish the diagnosis.

Could pregnancy, hormones or another condition explain this change? Which tests are suitable now? If I am pregnant or breastfeeding, would that alter imaging or treatment timing? What follow-up would I need if the finding is benign or if cancer is confirmed?
