Throat itchy cough medicine: what to know

An itchy throat with cough can follow nasal mucus draining from Allergic Rhinitis, irritation from Acid Reflux, or a viral illness such as Common Cold. Acute Bronchitis can cause a cough after an infection. Asthma may cause cough, wheeze or chest tightness, while a cough lasting a long time needs a different assessment.

The cough may be dry or bring up mucus. Colour alone does not identify the cause, and antibiotics are not suitable for every cough. A clinician may ask about triggers, breathing symptoms, medicines, smoking or vaping, and how long the cough has been present.

Drink fluids, use warm drinks if soothing, avoid smoke and strong fragrances, and consider a humidified room if dry air worsens the tickle. Honey may soothe a cough for adults and older children, but it should not be given to infants.

A pharmacist can help select a product for your age and symptoms. Check labels carefully because combination products may contain overlapping ingredients. Do not use someone else’s inhaler or take antibiotics without a prescription. If reflux seems relevant, discuss acid treatment rather than repeatedly suppressing the cough.

Get urgent help for difficult or rapid breathing, blue or grey lips, chest pain, coughing blood, confusion, or a severe allergic reaction. Arrange prompt review for wheezing, dehydration, a worsening cough, or a cough that persists or repeatedly returns. Children, older adults, and people with lung disease may need earlier advice.
