How Thoracic Outlet Syndrome Is Diagnosed

The clinician asks when symptoms began, which positions trigger them, whether the hand changes colour or temperature, and whether there is weakness or swelling. They check neck and shoulder movement, sensation, reflexes, grip, pulses and the appearance of both arms.

There is no single test that confirms every form of this condition. Depending on the findings, evaluation may include nerve studies, ultrasound or other imaging of the neck, shoulder or blood vessels. Neck problems, nerve entrapment at the elbow or wrist, and circulation disorders may need consideration.

Keep a brief record of triggers, duration, location and changes in colour, temperature or strength. Bring previous reports and a list of medicines. Do not deliberately reproduce severe symptoms during home tests. Once the likely cause is clearer, physiotherapy can assess movement and build a graded exercise plan; postural correction therapy may be one component.

Get urgent help for sudden arm swelling, a cold or blue hand, marked weakness, severe pain, chest pain or breathlessness. A gradually worsening loss of sensation or grip also warrants prompt review rather than self-testing.
