What should you know about third degree burn scar treatment?

A deep burn can heal with thick, raised, darker or lighter, itchy or sensitive tissue. Scar bands may pull across a joint or make the skin feel tight. A clinician considers whether the scar is still changing, whether the wound is fully closed and whether it affects comfort, appearance, movement or another body function.

Options may include silicone or pressure care, rehabilitation, injections, fractional laser treatment, scar revision surgery or a skin graft. These approaches have different purposes: laser may address texture and flexibility, revision may release or reshape tissue, and grafting may provide coverage after damaged skin is removed or released.

Book an evaluation with a dermatologist, plastic surgeon or burn-reconstruction specialist. Describe itching, pain, colour change, tightness and activities that have become difficult. Take a list of medicines and prior scar treatments. Photographs over time can help show whether the scar is changing.

Do not start strong acids, steroid creams or home devices on a burn scar without clinical advice. Use gentle cleansing, moisturise intact skin and protect the area from sunlight. After treatment, attend follow-up appointments because scar care and physical therapy may be part of the result.

Contact a clinician promptly for increasing pain, warmth, swelling, discharge, odour, recurrent cracking or a new lump within a scar. Seek urgent help for fever with spreading redness, uncontrolled bleeding, breathing difficulty or sudden functional loss. New rapid change should be examined rather than assumed to be ordinary scar maturation.

Ask what the treatment is intended to change, whether the scar is ready for intervention, which option suits its location, and how aftercare may affect work, exercise and joint movement. Ask about alternatives, likely stages, warning signs and the expected direction of improvement.
