Things that help with nausea

Short answer
Nausea may improve with small sips, light meals, fresh air, rest, and treatment directed at its underlying cause.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Fluids first
- Small, frequent sips are often easier than a full glass.
- Track the pattern
- Record onset, vomiting, pain, fever, urine, and possible triggers.
What nausea can signal
Nausea is the unsettled feeling that you may vomit. It can accompany a stomach infection such as [Gastroenteritis](/conditions/gastroenteritis/) or [Food Poisoning](/conditions/food-poisoning/), but it can also follow reflux, medication, migraine, motion, anxiety, heat, or low blood sugar. Abdominal pain with nausea can occur with [Gallstones](/conditions/gallstones/) or other conditions, so the pattern matters.
Notice when it began, whether vomiting or diarrhoea is present, what you can keep down, and whether there is fever, pain, dizziness, or a possible pregnancy. Nausea after heat exposure with sweating, weakness, or headache may fit [Heat Exhaustion](/conditions/heat-exhaustion/).
Practical relief
Take frequent small sips of water or an oral rehydration drink. Choose small portions of plain foods such as toast, rice, crackers, banana, or soup when ready, and avoid greasy, spicy, or strongly scented meals. Sit upright after eating, get cool fresh air, and rest. Ginger may suit some people, but check first if you take medicines or have a condition affected by it.
Do not force food while actively vomiting. Resume fluids gradually, then increase food as tolerated. A pharmacist or clinician can advise on an anti-nausea medicine after considering the cause, pregnancy, age, and other medicines. Do not take leftover prescriptions.
When to seek care
Get urgent medical help for severe or worsening abdominal pain, a swollen abdomen, confusion, fainting, stiff neck, chest pain, blood or coffee-ground material in vomit, or green vomit. Seek prompt review if you cannot keep fluids down, pass very little urine, have marked dizziness, or develop yellow skin or eyes. A clinician should assess persistent nausea, recurrent episodes, or nausea linked to diabetes; low blood sugar can require immediate treatment.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what cause best fits the timing and accompanying symptoms, whether you need an examination or tests, how to replace fluids, and which medicines are safe with your current treatment. Share recent travel, food exposures, heat exposure, and any chance of pregnancy.
