Thin endometrium after menopause: what to know

The endometrium is the inner lining of the uterus. Before menopause, hormones make it grow and shed during menstrual cycles. When ovarian hormone levels fall, the lining commonly becomes thin. An ultrasound may describe this finding even when you have no symptoms.

A thin measurement does not explain every symptom and does not by itself identify the cause of bleeding. Bleeding can also come from the vagina or cervix, including tissues that become delicate and dry after menopause. Your clinician may interpret the scan alongside your symptoms, medicines, hormone therapy, and examination findings.

If the scan was arranged for a reason other than bleeding, ask what the result means in your particular situation and whether any follow-up is needed. Keep a note of spotting, flow, colour, pain, and when it happened. Take your medication list to the appointment, including hormone treatment and medicines that affect bleeding.

Do not stop prescribed treatment without advice. If vaginal dryness or discomfort is present, mention it because it can help explain symptoms and guide suitable care. Menopause can also bring hot flushes, night sweats, or mood changes; these symptoms may be discussed separately from the ultrasound finding.

Contact a healthcare professional promptly for any bleeding after menopause, even if it is light or happens once. Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, severe or increasing pelvic pain, faintness, marked weakness, fever, or feeling very unwell. These warning symptoms need assessment based on their severity, not on whether the endometrium looks thin.

Ask: Was the endometrium measured clearly on the scan? Could my medicines or hormone treatment affect the result? Does my bleeding pattern require an examination or another test? What symptoms should make me seek urgent help?
