Yeast infection and irritation around the thighs

Vaginal thrush is caused by an overgrowth of Candida yeast. It commonly causes vulval itching, soreness, burning, and a change in vaginal discharge. Moisture and friction can irritate the groin and inner-thigh folds, creating a red, itchy, or tender rash that may extend beyond the vulva. Vaginal thrush presents with these symptoms; an itchy thigh does not confirm that thrush is the cause.

Other possibilities include contact irritation from soap, sweat rash, eczema, bacterial infection, or a sexually transmitted infection. A strong smell, green or yellow discharge, blisters, sores, fever, pelvic pain, or pain when passing urine makes a different or additional diagnosis more likely and should be checked.

Keep the area cool and dry, wash gently with water or an unperfumed cleanser, pat dry, and choose loose breathable underwear and clothing. Avoid douching, scented wipes, deodorants, and scratching. Do not use steroid or combination creams on the vulva or groin unless a clinician advises them.

A pharmacist or clinician can recommend antifungal treatment for thrush when the symptoms fit and treatment is suitable for you. Ask for advice before self-treating if this is the first episode, you are pregnant, symptoms keep returning, or the rash is mainly on the thigh rather than the vulva.

Arrange medical review if symptoms do not improve after appropriate treatment, return repeatedly, or spread across the skin. Seek prompt care for fever, pelvic pain, severe swelling, open skin, blisters, sores, foul-smelling discharge, or difficulty passing urine. These features can indicate infection or a skin condition needing a different treatment.

Ask whether the rash is thrush or another skin problem, whether a swab or examination is needed, and which treatment is safe with pregnancy or your medicines. Mention discharge, itching, pain, odour, recent antibiotics, diabetes, and products used on the area.
