Thigh swelling in pregnancy

Short answer
Thigh swelling in pregnancy can be ordinary fluid retention, but sudden one-sided swelling needs prompt medical assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Usually less concerning
- Gradual swelling in both legs without pain can occur in pregnancy.
- Act quickly
- One-sided swelling or breathlessness needs urgent assessment.
What the swelling may mean
Pregnancy changes circulation and can cause gradual swelling in the legs, ankles, and feet, often worse later in the day. Pressure from the growing womb and time spent standing can add to it. Swelling that is mainly in one thigh, starts quickly, or comes with warmth, redness, tenderness, or heaviness is different and needs medical advice because a blood clot is possible.
Swelling of the face or hands, a sudden increase in general swelling, severe headache, vision changes, pain beneath the ribs, or feeling very unwell may be warning signs of pre-eclampsia. This condition presents with these symptoms; ordinary thigh swelling does not tell you that pre-eclampsia is present.
What to do today
Tell your midwife, obstetrician, or maternity unit about new swelling, describing when it started and whether one side is affected. Rest with your legs supported, change position regularly, avoid standing for long periods, and wear comfortable shoes. Gentle movement can support circulation when it is comfortable.
Do not massage a painful or suddenly swollen thigh until a clinician has assessed it. Do not start medicines or compression garments without advice, especially if swelling is one-sided or painful. Keep antenatal appointments so blood pressure and urine can be checked.
When to seek care
Seek urgent maternity or emergency help for one-sided thigh swelling with pain, warmth, redness, chest pain, breathlessness, coughing blood, or faintness. Contact your maternity team urgently for sudden swelling of the face or hands, severe headache, vision disturbance, upper abdominal pain, or marked unwellness. These symptoms should not wait for a routine appointment.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the swelling pattern needs a leg examination, blood-pressure check, urine test, or imaging. Ask which activity is safe, whether compression is suitable, and which changes should prompt immediate return to the maternity unit.
