There’s a Small Lump on My Neck: What Should You Know?

Neck lumps commonly involve lymph nodes that enlarge during or after an infection. They may also be a thyroid nodule, salivary-gland swelling, skin cyst, or muscle-related lump. A lump can be painless or tender, soft or firm, and moveable or fixed; these features help a clinician decide what to examine next.

A neck lump is a presentation of head and neck cancer, lymphoma, or thyroid cancer in some people, but the lump itself does not establish a cancer diagnosis. Cancer of unknown primary can also be considered when abnormal tissue is found but its starting site is not clear.

Book a clinical assessment if the lump does not settle, keeps growing, feels hard or fixed, or has no clear link to a recent infection. Record when you first noticed it, whether it changes in size, and any fever, night sweats, unexplained weight change, hoarseness, swallowing difficulty, or ear pain.

Do not repeatedly squeeze or massage the area. A clinician may examine your mouth, throat, thyroid, and lymph-node regions, then arrange imaging or a needle sample if the findings call for it.

Seek urgent help if the swelling makes breathing or swallowing difficult, appears rapidly with facial swelling, or is accompanied by severe pain, high fever, or a muffled voice. Otherwise, arrange a timely appointment for a persistent or changing lump.
