What should you know about a lump in your neck?

A lump may be a swollen lymph node responding to an infection, a thyroid nodule, a salivary-gland problem, a cyst, or another benign change. Less commonly, it can be linked with head and neck cancer, lymphoma, thyroid cancer, or cancer found in a neck lymph node when the original site is not yet known.

Location, texture, mobility, tenderness, duration, and changes in size help guide assessment. The clinician may examine your mouth, throat, thyroid, skin, and lymph-node areas, then arrange imaging or a needle sample when needed. A neck lump alone cannot establish its cause.

Arrange a medical appointment if the lump does not settle, keeps returning, becomes larger, feels firm or fixed, or has no clear explanation. Note when you first noticed it, whether it changes with swallowing, and any recent infection, dental problem, voice change, or difficulty swallowing.

Do not repeatedly press or massage the area. Bring a list of medicines and previous test results, and mention smoking, alcohol use, prior cancer treatment, or radiation exposure because these details may affect the assessment.

Seek urgent care for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow liquids, rapidly increasing swelling, severe neck pain with fever, new weakness, or swelling of the face or tongue. Contact a clinician promptly for persistent hoarseness, unexplained weight loss, night sweats, or a lump that continues to enlarge.

Where is the lump coming from anatomically? Do I need ultrasound, other imaging, or a needle sample? Which changes should make me seek help sooner, and when will the results be reviewed?
