Short answer

PMDD is a severe, cycle-related mood disorder in which emotional and physical symptoms repeatedly disrupt daily life before a period.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Recognising the pattern

Symptoms can include intense irritability, low mood, anxiety, sudden tearfulness, anger, poor concentration, sleep changes, breast tenderness, bloating, and appetite changes. The defining clue is timing: symptoms arise during the premenstrual phase and ease after bleeding begins, although the pattern varies between people. PMDD is more disruptive than common premenstrual symptoms and is not a character flaw.

A symptom diary across several cycles can show whether mood changes follow the menstrual cycle or remain present throughout the month. Menopausal Mood Changes have a different hormonal context and should not be assumed to be PMDD.

Steps that can help

Record the first day of bleeding, daily mood, sleep, physical symptoms, medicines, and effects on work or relationships. Share the record with a gynaecology or mental health clinician. Treatment may include talking therapy, lifestyle support, or medicines such as selected antidepressants; some people discuss a Combined Pill when contraception is also wanted. Avoid stopping prescribed medicine suddenly.

Regular sleep, movement, balanced meals, and reducing alcohol may support coping, but severe symptoms deserve clinical assessment even when self-care helps a little.

Urgent emotional support

Seek urgent help if you feel unsafe, think about harming yourself or someone else, cannot manage basic daily activities, or experience severe agitation or loss of contact with reality. Tell a trusted person and contact local emergency services or a crisis service. During pregnancy or after birth, ask about Perinatal Mental Health Support for tailored care.

Questions for your doctor

Ask how to confirm the cycle pattern, which treatment fits your symptoms and contraception needs, when improvement should be reviewed, and what to do if mood symptoms occur outside the premenstrual phase.

Questions people ask

Is PMDD the same as PMS?

No. PMDD causes more severe emotional and functional disruption than typical premenstrual symptoms.

Can PMDD affect relationships?

Yes. Irritability, anger, anxiety, or low mood can strain relationships, which is one reason early support matters.
