Where is tetanus found?

The bacteria can contaminate outdoor objects, gardening materials, and surfaces carrying soil or animal waste. A puncture from a sharp object, a dirty cut, burn, bite, crush injury, or wound containing a foreign material can provide an entry point.

You do not need to see dirt for a wound to deserve attention, and stepping on a nail is not the only possible route. Tetanus is not acquired by breathing near someone with the illness or by ordinary household contact. Protection depends on vaccination history and the nature of the injury.

Wash your hands, rinse the wound under clean running water, and gently remove visible surface debris. Cover the area with a clean dressing. Avoid probing, burning, or applying unclean substances to the wound.
