Tetanus vaccination after injury: what to know

Short answer

After an injury, tetanus vaccination decisions depend on the wound, your previous doses, and how quickly a clinician can assess you.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Urgent signs
Breathing change, spasms, uncontrolled bleeding, or shock

Why the injury matters

Tetanus bacteria can enter through punctures, cuts, burns, crush injuries, bites, or wounds contaminated with soil or saliva. The risk assessment is not based on the wound's size alone. A clinician also checks whether the injury is clean or contaminated and reviews your vaccination record. An inactivated vaccine cannot cause tetanus, but it does not replace cleaning, repair, or treatment of an established infection.

Steps to take now

Wash your hands, rinse the wound with clean running water, and cover it with a fresh dressing. Do not remove firmly embedded objects yourself or close a contaminated wound at home. Seek prompt medical advice with the injury details and any vaccination record. The clinician may recommend a tetanus vaccine, additional immune protection, wound cleaning, or repair. Stitches may be considered only after the wound has been properly assessed and cleaned.

When to get emergency help

Use emergency services for uncontrolled bleeding, loss of movement or feeling, a deep wound to the face, hand, chest, or abdomen, or signs of shock. Seek immediate help for jaw stiffness, spasms, difficulty swallowing, or breathing changes. Prompt assessment is also needed for a bite, puncture, crush injury, burn, or wound with embedded material.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the injury is considered contaminated, what your record shows, and whether you need vaccine or immune protection. Ask how to change the dressing, whether repair is appropriate, and what infection signs require review.

Questions people ask

Should I wait until the wound becomes painful?

No. Contact a clinician promptly after a high-risk injury, even when pain is limited and the wound looks small.

Can a tetanus vaccine be given with wound repair?

A clinician can coordinate vaccination with cleaning or repair after examining the injury and reviewing your history.
