What should you know about tetanus shot for human bite?

A bite can crush tissue and introduce bacteria beneath the skin. Tetanus is a separate risk from the other infections associated with a bite, so a clinician will review both. They may ask when your last tetanus-containing vaccine was given, whether you completed the initial course, where the bite is, and how deeply the skin was broken. A booster may be advised when protection is not current or the wound is considered higher risk.

Wash the wound with running water and soap, remove rings or tight items near swelling, and cover it with a clean dressing. Do not close the wound yourself or apply harsh chemicals. Arrange same-day medical advice for any bite that breaks the skin, particularly on a hand, face, foot, or near a joint. Bring your vaccination record if available and describe when the bite happened. Antibiotics, stitches, or other treatment may be considered separately from tetanus prevention.

Go for urgent assessment if bleeding will not stop with firm pressure, the wound is deep or gaping, a tooth may be embedded, or there is numbness, severe pain, or loss of movement. Seek prompt review for increasing redness, warmth, swelling, drainage, fever, or red streaks. A bite to the eye, airway, or a major blood vessel area needs emergency care.

Ask whether your wound needs cleaning or closure, whether antibiotics are appropriate, whether a tetanus booster is advised, and which changes should bring you back. Mention pregnancy, immune problems, or medicines that affect immunity.
