Tetanus diphtheria shot side effects: what to expect

The injection site may become sore, red, warm, or slightly swollen. You may also feel tired, develop a mild fever, headache, muscle aches, or nausea. These responses reflect your immune system reacting to the vaccine and often settle without specific treatment.

Local discomfort can make it harder to move the arm normally for a short time. A mild temperature or achiness can occur as the body builds protection against tetanus and diphtheria. The vaccine cannot cause tetanus or diphtheria.

A reaction that starts soon after vaccination and includes widespread hives, swelling of the lips or throat, wheezing, faintness, or trouble breathing may signal a severe allergic response. This is different from ordinary arm soreness and requires emergency help.

Rest if you feel unwell, drink fluids, and use a cool, clean cloth over the injection site for brief periods. Gentle arm movement may reduce stiffness; avoid rubbing the area forcefully.

If pain or fever is uncomfortable, ask a pharmacist or clinician which medicine is suitable for you, especially if you are pregnant, have a long-term condition, or take other medicines. Do not take antibiotics for ordinary vaccine soreness or fever; they do not treat this immune response.

Call emergency services immediately for difficulty breathing, throat or tongue swelling, widespread hives, collapse, or severe dizziness after vaccination. Stay with the person and follow the emergency operator's instructions.

Contact a clinician if the injection-site redness or swelling is rapidly worsening, pain is severe, fever is high or persistent, or you are worried about a reaction that is not improving. Keep your vaccination record available and tell them when the dose was given.

Ask which symptoms are expected with your specific vaccine, what pain or fever relief is appropriate for you, and whether a previous vaccine reaction changes your next dose.
