Tetanus and animals: what to know

Tetanus bacteria are found in the environment and can enter broken skin. A bite may puncture tissue deeply, while a scratch can carry dirt beneath the skin. The concern is the wound and contamination, not that the animal has tetanus.

Animal injuries can also cause crushing, damaged tendons, infection, or a separate rabies exposure. A clinician will consider the wound’s depth and location, how it was cleaned, and your tetanus vaccination history. An apparently small mark can still need professional advice.

Move away from the animal safely, wash the area with soap and running water, and cover it with a clean dressing. Do not scrub deeply, pour harsh chemicals into the wound, or close a puncture yourself. Contact a healthcare service promptly for assessment.

Record what happened, including the animal type, whether the skin broke, where the injury is, and when it occurred. If the animal is known, provide its vaccination or ownership details without putting yourself at risk. Bring your tetanus record if available; treatment should not wait while you search for paperwork.

Seek urgent assessment for a deep puncture, bite to the hand, face, or foot, uncontrolled bleeding, an injury near a joint, or a wound with dirt, saliva, or foreign material. Also seek advice after contact with a stray or unavailable mammal because rabies assessment may be separate from tetanus prevention.

Get emergency help for severe bleeding, loss of movement, numbness, breathing difficulty, or rapidly spreading swelling. In the following days, increasing redness, warmth, pus, fever, or worsening pain can indicate wound infection and needs prompt review.

Ask: Does this wound need a tetanus booster or other prevention? Do I need antibiotics or assessment for another infection? Could the animal contact create a rabies concern? Which changes in the wound should bring me back urgently?
