What should you know about fractional CO2 laser treatment?

Short answer

Fractional CO2 laser resurfacing creates controlled microscopic columns of heat in the skin to prompt renewal, and the right settings, preparation, aftercare, and patient selection influence recovery and results.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What fractional CO2 treatment does

A CO2 laser delivers energy to water in skin cells. In a fractional treatment, the beam treats a pattern of tiny columns while untreated skin remains between them. This can support changes in texture, fine lines, some scars, and selected pigmentation concerns, but suitability depends on the skin problem and skin type.

Redness, warmth, swelling, tenderness, peeling, and temporary darkening or lightening can occur during healing. Infection, prolonged inflammation, scarring, and pigment change are recognised concerns. A consultation should cover previous cold sores, keloid scarring, active acne or infection, recent tanning, medicines, and the exact treatment area.

How to prepare and recover

Use the preparation plan provided by the treating clinician and avoid tanning before treatment. Arrive with clean skin and disclose every medicine, supplement, cosmetic procedure, and history of abnormal scarring. Afterward, cleanse exactly as instructed, keep the area moisturised, do not pick peeling skin, and protect healing skin from ultraviolet exposure.

Recovery varies with the energy settings and treated area. Delay makeup, swimming, saunas, active products, or vigorous exercise until the clinician says the skin barrier is ready. Results develop as the skin heals and remodels; more treatment is not automatically better.

When to seek medical care

Contact the treating clinic for increasing pain, spreading redness, pus, worsening swelling, fever, new blisters, or delayed healing. Seek urgent help for facial swelling with breathing difficulty or a severe allergic reaction. Report a new cold-sore cluster promptly because early treatment may matter.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which concern the laser is intended to treat, why fractional CO2 is suitable for your skin, what settings and recovery period are expected, and which alternatives exist. Ask who will perform it, how complications are handled, and what aftercare products you should use.

Questions people ask

Is fractional CO2 laser the same as full-field resurfacing?

No. Fractional treatment leaves untreated skin between treatment columns, while full-field resurfacing treats a broader continuous surface.

When can I return to normal skincare?

Restart products gradually only when the clinician confirms the skin barrier has healed; irritating actives may need a pause.
