What should you know about teoae hearing test?

Short answer

A TEOAE hearing test uses a soft probe to record inner-ear responses and helps screen how the cochlea is functioning.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What TEOAE checks

TEOAE stands for transient evoked otoacoustic emissions. During the test, a probe sits at the ear canal entrance and presents quiet sounds. A functioning cochlea can produce a measurable response that the equipment records. The test is quick and does not require the person being tested to give spoken answers, which makes it useful for babies and for people who cannot complete conventional responses easily. A result that does not show a clear response does not by itself prove permanent hearing loss. Movement, background noise, an unwell child, fluid behind the eardrum or earwax buildup can affect the recording.

Preparing and following up

Keep the room quiet and help the person being tested remain still and settled. Do not place objects in the ear before the appointment. Ask the audiology team whether feeding, sleeping or bringing a familiar comfort item would help a young child. If the screen is incomplete or does not show a clear response, follow the recommended repeat test or full hearing assessment rather than assuming the outcome. Tell the clinician about ear infections, discharge, dizziness, ringing or known hearing changes.

When to seek care

Arrange medical assessment for sudden hearing loss, severe ear pain, blood or fluid from the ear, new facial weakness, severe dizziness or a sudden change in balance. Persistent hearing difficulty, speech or language concerns in a child, or repeated failed screening also warrants follow-up. Earwax buildup can interfere with sound and may need appropriate examination; do not insert cotton buds or other objects into the canal.

Questions for the clinician

Ask whether the recording was complete in each ear, whether the result is a screen or a diagnostic conclusion, and what test comes next. You can also ask how earwax, middle-ear fluid, noise or movement may have influenced the result, and whether a hearing specialist should review it.

Questions people ask

Is TEOAE the same as a full hearing diagnosis?

No. It is a screening measure of an inner-ear response, and an unclear result may need repeat testing or a broader assessment.

Can earwax affect a TEOAE result?

Yes. Blockage in the ear canal can interfere with the probe or sound pathway, so the ear may need examination by a clinician.
