Tension headache and throwing up: what to know

How the structures involved in Tension Headache differ from normal

Short answer

Throwing up is not typical of a tension-type headache, so a new or severe headache with vomiting needs careful assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Typical tension pattern
Pressure or tightness without prominent vomiting
Helpful record
Onset, duration, triggers, vomiting, and other symptoms
Urgent concern
Sudden severe pain or neurological change

What this combination can mean

Tension-type headache commonly feels like steady pressure or a tight band around the head and is often linked with scalp, neck, or shoulder muscle tension. Vomiting points away from a straightforward tension pattern and can occur with migraine, infection, dehydration, medication effects, or another problem that needs examination. The symptom pattern alone cannot identify the cause.

Notice whether light or sound worsens the pain, whether movement makes it worse, and whether you have fever, neck stiffness, vision change, weakness, confusion, or recent head injury. Keep a record of when the pain began and how quickly it developed.

What to do now

Rest somewhere quiet, take small frequent sips of water or an oral rehydration drink, and avoid alcohol. Do not force food while you are actively vomiting; try bland food once fluids stay down. Use only pain medicine that is suitable for you and follow its label directions. Repeated painkiller use can itself contribute to recurring headaches.

Arrange a GP consultation if vomiting continues, the headache keeps returning, or this pattern is different from your usual headaches. A clinician can check your neurological signs, hydration, medicines, and other possible triggers.

When to seek urgent help

Seek emergency care for a sudden very severe headache, repeated vomiting with inability to keep fluids down, fainting, confusion, seizure, new weakness or numbness, trouble speaking, severe drowsiness, fever with a stiff neck, or a headache after a head injury. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint, confused, or unsafe.

Useful questions for a clinician

Ask: Could this pattern be migraine or another cause rather than tension-type headache? Which warning signs should prompt emergency care? What fluids or medicines are safe with my health conditions? Should I keep a headache and vomiting diary?
