Tension headache and shortness of breath

Short answer
Tension headache can occur during stress-related rapid breathing, but shortness of breath must be assessed according to its severity and associated symptoms.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Possible overlap
- Stress-related rapid breathing can worsen head and neck tension

- Trigger, activity, cough, wheeze, chest symptoms and onset
- Emergency sign
- Severe breathlessness, chest pressure or throat swelling
What the combination can mean
Pain, worry and rapid shallow breathing can tighten the chest and neck and make a headache feel worse. Breathlessness may also occur with conditions such as asthma, acute bronchitis, anaemia, angina, atrial fibrillation, bronchiectasis or COPD. A serious allergic reaction can cause sudden breathing difficulty with swelling, wheeze or dizziness.
The duration, trigger and accompanying signs help guide urgency. Breathlessness at rest, after mild activity, or with chest pressure is not explained safely by calling the headache a tension headache.
What to do now
Stop exertion, sit upright and loosen tight clothing. Breathe slowly and gently without forcing deep breaths. If you have a prescribed reliever inhaler, use it according to your personal plan. Do not drive if you are struggling to breathe, faint or feel confused.
Arrange a medical assessment for new, unexplained or recurring breathlessness. Note when it began, what you were doing, whether there is cough or wheeze, and whether the headache changed at the same time.
When to seek care
Call emergency services for severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, blue or grey lips, inability to speak in full sentences, chest pressure, fainting, confusion, coughing blood, or swelling of the lips, tongue or throat. Seek urgent advice for new breathlessness with palpitations, fever, wheeze or a severe headache.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your breathing needs examination, heart or lung checks, and what action plan fits your symptoms. Tell the clinician about smoking or vaping, allergies, inhalers and any medicines.
