What should you know about tension headache affect ears?

Muscles around the temples, jaw, scalp, and upper neck sit close to the ears and can refer discomfort to that area. Teeth grinding, jaw clenching, posture, and stress may add aching or fullness. Tension headache itself does not explain every ear symptom, however.

Ringing, reduced hearing, discharge, marked dizziness, ear tenderness, fever, or pain that is clearly inside one ear can point to an ear or balance problem. A headache with visual, speech, strength, or awareness changes needs a different level of urgency.

Notice whether symptoms follow jaw clenching, chewing, long screen sessions, or neck strain. Keep the jaw loose, avoid chewing gum during a flare, take posture breaks, and use gentle warmth on tight muscles if comfortable. Do not put objects or unprescribed drops into the ear.

Record whether the sensation is pressure, pain, ringing, muffled hearing, or spinning, and whether it affects one or both sides. Arrange a GP consultation if it persists, recurs, or is difficult to distinguish from an ear problem.

Seek emergency care for sudden severe headache with weakness, confusion, fainting, seizure, new speech or vision problems, or a severe loss of balance. Seek prompt medical review for sudden hearing loss, persistent spinning dizziness, fever with severe ear pain, ear discharge, or symptoms after a head injury.
